What Are The Types Of Shower Heads?
When you’re looking for a showerhead, you may find that the selection that is available is too difficult to choose from. After all, it’s not just a case of getting the showerhead that looks the best, but you want the one that provides the functions that you want. If you’re wondering what the difference is between all these different kinds of the shower head, read on. We’ll take a look at all the popular types of showerhead so that you know what the difference is and to help you to choose the one that is best for you.
Rain Shower Heads
Rain shower heads are so popular because they allow you to have a luxurious spa experience from the comfort of your own home. These rain showerheads offer you multiple sensation options so that you can have the exact shower experience that you want.
You can choose from all kinds of design of rain showerheads, from classic looks to more modern and contemporary models and you can find heads of different sizes too. They usually tend to be larger than a standard showerhead though so that they can produce a wide rainfall spray.
Jumbo shower head sizes are the best if you want a voluminous amount of rain with your shower, but of course, you should check the dimensions of your shower area to make sure that it would be a comfortable fit. There are several manufacturers offering rainfall showerheads so you can take your pick of design and warranty options.
Handheld Shower Heads
When you need flexibility in the shower, you should consider buying a handheld shower head. These are shower heads that have a handle so that they can be held for more precise and detailed showering. If you have pets or children, you may find a handheld showerhead especially useful as you can hold the shower head in your hand to operate the shower without ending up soaked yourself. There are also dual shower head models including handheld shower heads.
Some handheld showerheads can be mounted to the wall using a fixed holder, but most people prefer to get a rail mounted showerhead. This is a showerhead cradle that can move up and down the length of the rail so that you can adjust the height of the shower. Again, this is useful if you have children who are smaller.
These showerheads are very easy to install and can be installed without hiring a plumber. As long as you already have the pipework in place, you can be using your new handheld shower within minutes.
Wall mounted showerheads are preferred by some businesses like hotels and gyms. If it is not convenient or necessary to install a handheld showerhead, a wall mounted one can be a better option.
You can find different kinds of wall mounted showers. Some even come with a handheld shower attachment on them so that you can have flexibility when you want it. They usually have at least the ability to change the angle with the use of a ball joint or similar.
These showers are elegant and minimalistic and can look impressive if you choose one that is a luxurious designer brand. You can choose from chrome or nickel finishes usually
It is a good idea to look out for wall mounted heads that have been designed not to clog, as it can be difficult to clean the heads of these showers, especially if they are installed quite high up.
Filtered Shower Heads
If you want a really clean showering experience or if the water quality is not good where you live, you can choose a filtered shower head. These kinds of showerheads don’t usually offer you as many luxurious styles as other kinds of showerheads, but instead, you will have a more practical option.
By using a filter to filter the water that passes through the shower, you can be sure that these kinds of showerheads will not need much cleaning. The filter will keep out mineral deposits so that the nozzles do not get clogged.
Another thing that these filtered shower heads do is neutralizing odors and remove sulfur from the shower’s water supply. If you’ve ever noticed a bad smell coming from your shower, you may want to consider getting a filtered showerhead.
Remember filtered showerheads require a filter to work properly and you will need to replace this periodically. It is a good idea to ensure that you can afford the maintenance of this kind of showerhead.
Led Shower Heads
For a really impressive and modern look, you should look at LED shower heads. These shower heads are available in a variety of styles, but they are usually more luxurious designs that feature LED.
These bathroom fixtures emit a low energy light to offer some ambient lighting to your shower experience. The low power LED will not need any special maintenance and will last for a long time without needing replacement. You will be able to find LED showerheads that offer spa-like features, including rainfall and massage sprays so that you can experience a luxurious spa shower in your own home.
The LED usually change color in accordance with the temperature of the water and the colors are usually red, blue and green to signify hot, cold and just right. This can be the preferred option for families with children because the LED can also act as a safety indicator.
Bluetooth Shower Heads
Do you love listening to music in the bath? If you purchase a Bluetooth shower head, you’ll be able to do just that.
These showerheads are the newest style around and they feature cutting edge technology. Thanks to a Bluetooth receiver in the shower, you are able to pair the showerhead with any Bluetooth device that can transmit music and use the shower as a speaker.
You don’t need to take your phone or your laptop into the bathroom with you whilst you shower, as the showerhead usually has a long Bluetooth range. A speaker in the showerhead plays you your favorite music and you don’t need to worry about your electronic device getting ruined in the humidity of the bathroom.
The shower usually has buttons to allow you to control the volume of the music so that you can customize your experience. The showerhead itself acts like any other showerhead in providing you with multiple sprays and flow options and sometimes can be handheld whilst other models are fixed.
High-Pressure Shower Heads
Whilst it would be ideal if everyone in the country had the same water supply at the same pressure, things are never so straightforward. There are a lot of homes that have low water pressure, and this means that some showerheads can underperform.
Due to a law in the United States, shower heads can only be sold if they have a certain maximum pressure. In order to enforce this, there are many manufacturers that make their showerheads with a flow restrictor valve. This means that the pressure of the water is restricted so that even those in low-pressure areas will experience a drop in water pressure through their shower.
In order to counteract this, you can purchase high-pressure shower heads that allow you to manually remove the flow restrictor. Some of these shower heads are easier to remove the restrictor from than others and you may need tools to complete this task, but it does offer you an option if you have low water pressure. We also reviewed low flow shower heads here.
Other Shower Heads
Of course, these aren’t the only kinds of showerheads available, but they are some of the most popular. When you are looking for the perfect shower head for your home, it is likely that you will see even more kinds of showers to choose from.
Some of the other kinds of showerheads include shower panels. These are mounted onto one of the walls in your shower stall and offer you all the controls that you could possibly need for the most luxurious showering experience ever. As these are luxurious showers, they usually come with a fixed and a handheld shower so that you can use one or both shower head options at the same time. These showers are not so easy to install and you should get a plumber to do this for you if you are not confident to install it for yourself.
If a panel isn’t for you but you would like the freedom of having a fixed and a handheld shower, you can purchase shower heads that have two showers incorporated into the design. You will be able to use one or both of the showerheads at the same time, although you should be aware that using two showerheads simultaneously could result in a loss of water pressure.
Although a showerhead isn’t the most glamorous accessory that you’ll buy for your home, it is still an important purchase. This is something that you will be using day after day and if you don’t choose the right one, you could end up missing out on comfort, spending more than you need to on water and purchasing an item that is bad for the environment. That is why it is so important to take your time and to choose the most suitable showerhead the first time.
The right showerhead will be one that saves you money and energy as well as being as luxurious as possible for the budget that you have. If you’re wondering how to get the top showerheads for your money, check out our extensive buying guide as we explain just what to look out for.
Fixed or Hand-Held?
There are really two main kinds of showerhead available. You can either choose a handheld one or a fixed one. A handheld showerhead is one that usually rests on a holder that is mounted to a rail on the wall or it could be an extension of a fixed system that has a height adjustable bracket to allow you to use it as a fixed shower too. Many people prefer the adjustable height shower bars as these ensure that everyone in the household can use the shower regardless of their height. These showerheads usually come as part of the whole shower assembly with the adjustable bar and mounting kit although you can purchase a different showerhead if you’d like to update your existing one.
You can usually choose from a variety of styles and designs and the price of these kits varies greatly. There is a handheld showerhead to suit most people’s budgets.
A fixed showerhead is a little simpler in that it is fixed to the wall and there is no additional option for the showerhead. This can look tidier if you like the simplistic look, but it removes the convenience of being able to use the shower head for cleaning children, pets or washing your hair without needing to get into the shower. Older people and the disabled sometimes prefer handheld showers too.
You will still be able to adjust the spray style on the showerhead regardless of which kind of showerhead you choose. You should check out reviews of the showerhead that you’re considering purchasing and if it is possible, you could also visit the store and hold the showerhead to see if you like the way that it operates and how heavy the showerhead is too.
The good news is that whether you buy a fixed or a handheld showerhead, you will usually be able to install it yourself without needing to call out a plumber to do it for you, saving money on installation fees.
You should think carefully about the logistics of installing your shower when you get it home. Some showers can be very costly and the last thing that you want is to blow your budget on the shower without considering the cost to actually install it once you have purchased it.
Handheld and fixed basic showerheads are usually the best options to choose. You will be able to install these kinds of showers yourself. All that you will need to do is screw the wall fitting onto the wall and you’re done.
You should make sure that the wall you’re planning on screwing it onto is strong enough to take the weight of the shower that you want to install. Some showers can be very heavy so it is advisable to ask a professional if you are unsure.
Electric showers will need to be installed by a certified electrician to ensure that the shower will be completely safe for you to use. You should ensure that one person can install the whole shower, otherwise, you may find that you have to hire a plumber too.
When you purchase your shower, you should check to see how energy efficient the shower is. Some of the older showers output 10 to 18 liters per minute, which is highly energy inefficient and can mean that you have to pay more money for your water if your water is monitored using a meter. Water saving showers usually use between 5 to 7 liters a minute which is half as much as the older models and you won’t lose any of the water pressure either. You can check EPA’s website to learn what is WaterSense to save water.
Another area you will save money in addition to saving water is by heating less water. By only using half the water, you will only need to heat half the amount of water too. This means that you will be able to lower your carbon footprint and save further money on your heating bill. It is estimated that a low water use showerhead can actually cut your water bill by around 15%!
If you would like to know how you could save even more energy still, you should look at the water pressure in your home. Get your home’s water pressure checked because if our home water pressure is too low, then a low water shower will probably not provide you with as much pressure as you need. If your water pressure is too high, you could actually be putting more strain than necessary on all your other water fed appliances and this could cost you more money in the long run as you will need to replace more items in a short amount of time. Water pressure that is too high could also force more water through your shower head than is supposed to, meaning that you won’t really be saving as much if any water at all.
When you get anything for your home, you want to make sure that it is as safe to use as possible. This is especially true if you have children who will be using the shower, as children have more sensitive skin than adults.
Because showerheads handle hot and cold water, it is possible for some showerheads to let out water that is too hot and this could result in the shower user being scalded. This is not only an unpleasant experience but it can also be dangerous. Whilst you could simply lower the thermostat on your water heater, some people prefer to use an anti-scald shower. These kinds of showers can cut off the water supply through the shower or simply reduce it to a trickle if it becomes too hot.
You could also install a thermostatic valve to your hot pipe near your shower. This would prevent water that is too hot from passing through the valve. This may be an alternative for someone who doesn’t want to replace their entire shower, but if your pipes are installed behind a tiled wall, this can be more trouble than it’s worth. If you would have to knock into your wall to install a valve on the pipe, you would probably be better off getting a new anti-scald shower instead.
Some showers also have a LED color change light built into the head. This light changes color to indicate when the water is too cold, too hot or ready to shower in.
The finish of the showerhead may be an important feature to consider – especially if you like everything in your rooms to match the existing décor.
If you have decided not to replace your entire bathroom and you simply want to buy a new shower to replace an old or broken one, you should be careful that your bathroom fixtures match the finish of your shower. Check for different finish options before you buy and remember to check that you choose the right kind of finish, for example, nickel or chrome and brushed or polished.
If you want to replace your entire bathroom and fixtures, you should make sure that all the new accessories that you purchase for the bathroom match each other.
If you have hard water, you should bear this in mind when you are making your purchase. Rubber nozzles will ensure that mineral deposits will not clog the shower head. Rubber nozzles are also easier to clean. Choosing a plastic head may be a good idea too if you have hard water. All metal showerheads can collect mineral deposits and the showerhead can end up looking crusty with white marks that are difficult to remove. De-scaling a showerhead is hard work and needs a lot of maintenance to prevent, so make sure that you consider this before you buy your new showerhead.
Upgrading your shower can be very affordable or it can be highly costly. With such a great price scale, homeowners with any budget are able to plan to replace their existing shower or install a shower in their bathroom.
If you have seen a more expensive shower or shower set, you should read reviews and do a little more search on it. Does it actually provide you with any more features than a cheaper model and if you are only considering purchasing it because of the way it looks, is there any cheaper models out there that look similar and are the aesthetics good enough to spend so much money on the shower?
When you are comparing different models of showerhead or shower, you should remember that the shower’s price tag might not actually reflect better quality. In order to check this out, you should look at the things that customers say about the shower or showerhead online before you make your decision.
Another factor that you should consider when you’re replacing your shower is the people who will be using it. If you only have one bathroom in your home and this is the only shower that you have, it is worth spending a little more on making sure that you purchase one that is durable and that will last for a long time, even with everyone in your household using it on a daily basis. If you are only going to be replacing a shower in a guest bathroom, you may want to think about purchasing a really impressive looking shower but you may be able to save a little money on the cost of the shower by getting one that performs slightly poorer than a more frequently used shower. For a bathroom that only you will use, for example as part of an en-suite bedroom, you can choose whatever shower you want. It doesn’t even need to match the décor if you don’t particularly want it to.
As mentioned already, you may be able to save money with the cost of installing your shower. If you find a shower that is easy to install, you will only need to consider the cost of the shower, as you will be able to install it yourself. If however, you need someone to install the shower for you because you are not confident doing it yourself or if the installation process is a little more complicated, you should remember to factor in the cost of hiring someone to install it for you.
These tips are just some of the points that you should consider when you are choosing the most suitable shower head for your needs. You should bear them all in mind when making your decision as you could save a lot of money, not just when buying the showerhead and having it installed but also in the long term by saving energy and water.
Remember that you should always buy the showerhead that you can possibly afford and choose one that is durable. This will ensure that you won’t need to replace it too early. Some people think that they are saving a lot of money by purchasing one of the cheaper showers or showerheads, but in actual fact, these showerheads are often very inefficient with energy and their parts can start to wear over just a few years so the shower will need to be replaced again anyway.

How To Replace A Shower Head?
Step 1 – Prep Your Working Area
It’s important to ensure that your work area is ready before you begin. Make sure that you protect your bath or shower base with an old towel or thick sheet. Turn off your water supply and open all your bathroom faucets to ensure that you won’t have any leaks or nasty surprises.
Step 2 – Remove The Old Showerhead
You should ensure that you have a set of pliers to hand for this task as old showerheads can sometimes be stuck on well.
You should remove any old sealant from the threads of the shower with a cloth and a little paint thinner.
Step 3 – Prep The Attachment For The New Showerhead
Now you will need to ensure that your shower doesn’t leak when you have screwed it onto the attachment. In order to do this, you should wrap some Teflon plumbers tape around the threads. This will ensure a leak-proof seal. It is important that you wrap the tape in the same direction, as it will be tightened when you attach the showerhead to prevent tears.
Step 4 – Check The Instructions
You need to ensure that you attach the showerhead properly. If it is a basic shower head, you may be able to simply screw the diverter directly onto the existing pipework, but it is a good idea to check before you proceed.
Step 5 – Attach The Diverter
You can now screw the shower diverter onto the pipework. You only need to hand tighten this. If you use a tool such as a wrench, you could end up pinching the connector out of shape causing leaks. You can also attach the hose to the shower head if necessary.
How To Clean A Shower Head?
No Tool Approach
If removing your showerhead isn’t an option, you can get it clean without any tools.
You will need a plastic bag that is large enough to fit over the shower head, but not too large. You will also need a rubber band.
- Now, you should put the rubber band on the showerhead and make it so that it fits tightly over the arm of the shower.
- Fill the plastic bag with white vinegar. Put the plastic bag over the showerhead and secure it with the band.
- You should leave the showerhead for an hour before you take the bag and the band off it.
- You will need to flush the white vinegar out of the nozzles, so turn on the shower for a minute or two. This should clear any mineral deposits and debris from the inside of the showerhead.
- You can polish the chrome of the showerhead with a soft clean cloth to give it a nice shine.
If the vinegar has failed to get the mineral buildup out of the showerhead, you may need to do a more thorough clean.
- Firstly, you should unscrew the nut, which is located at the bottom of the shower arm. This will disconnect the shower. You will then need to remove the showerhead. This will require some care so that you can get the showerhead back on again afterward. Wrap a rag around the connector if you are going to use a wrench so that you don’t mar the finish of the showerhead or damage the pipework.
- Now, you should rinse your showerhead. You should use the faucet in your home that offers the highest water pressure and run water into the nozzles until the debris starts to work its way free.
- If this still doesn’t work, you can dismantle and clean the showerhead. Sometimes, particularly stubborn pieces of debris need a little extra work. Take an old toothbrush – not one that you intend to use again – and use some vinegar on it to scrub the showerhead. Pay special attention to the nozzles, and this should help to loosen the mineral deposits.
- You can soak the showerhead overnight in a bag of vinegar to completely remove all mineral deposits. Remember to rinse the showerhead when you take it out of the vinegar and polish the chrome.
- If the showerhead has rubbery or plastic nozzles, you should be able to squeeze them to break up and remove the debris.
- Now you will need to reassemble your showerhead. Ensure that you wrap some Teflon plumber’s take around the threads of the shower connector before you reattach it. This will ensure that the shower will not leak when you reattach it. You shouldn’t use any tools to tighten it so that you avoid causing any damage. If you do want to use a wrench to create a tight connection, you should cushion the tool with a rag to ensure that you don’t damage the finish or the attachment.
- If you are using a shower curtain or a shower curtain liner, you should definitely keep them clean and maintained.
Adjusting Your Water Heater To Change Your Shower’s Temperature
If your shower simply isn’t hot enough for you, or if it is too hot and needs turning down a little, you can make this adjustment yourself at home. Usually, it means that you simply haven’t found the perfect temperature for your hot water heater, but if you think that there is a problem with your hot water heater, you may need to call out a plumber who can help you further. Usually, 120 degrees Fahrenheit is the preferred temperature for home water heaters in order to ensure that bacteria is killed in the heater and to ensure that it is a good temperature in your shower.
Sometimes, this temperature may be too high for people in the household with sensitive skin. The elderly and children may find that the water is a little too hot. If this is the case for you, you could simply turn down the temperature dial on the hot water system but if your heater is difficult to get to or if it is impractical to get to the heater, you can use the following guide to find out how to remove the panel to change the temperature for your shower.
- Turn off the hot water heater by locating the switch in your circuit breaker panel.
- Remove the cover that is over the temperature dial on the water heater using a screwdriver. The panel cover is normally labeled as having the dial behind it.
- There is usually some insulation behind the panel cover, so you should remove this before you continue.
- You can now use a flat-headed screwdriver to change the temperature setting.
- Put the insulation back and ensure that you screw the cover back on.
- You can now turn the hot water heater back on again.
